Physical description
One of a pair of silver-gilt communion plates in a Gothic style, part of a set. Scalloped edge with applied gothic tracery around border, the rim engraved with the Royal Arms, sacred monogram 'IHS' in a rayed surround engraved in the centre. Maker's mark and London hallmarks stamped on base. Made by Edward Barnard & Sons, English (London), 1831

    Translation
    'IHS' a monogram for the name Jesus, denotes 'Iesus Hominum Salvator', or 'Jesus, Saviour of Men'
  • Underside of dish stamped with five marks, the maker's mark for Edward Barnard and Sons (E, E, W, J around B in a quatrefoil-shaped punch); the lion passant; the leopard's head; the date letter for the London assay year 1831-32; and the duty mark.

This plate (from a set) was presented to Mapledurham Church in 1831, by the Vicar, the Reverend Lord Augustus Fitz-Clarence (1805-54), the fifth son of William IV by the actress Mrs Jordan. Each piece is engraved with the sacred monogram with a cross, the Royal Arms is engraved above, debruised with a baton.
