Object history
Oval bowls with two handles, like this one, were used to drink brandy. The images of embracing children on the handles, and a pomegranate flanked by a pair of parrots or cockatoos embossed on the sides suggest this cup celebrated a betrothal or marriage. Handles of identical design appear on other bowls which were also made in the Frisian area of The Netherlands.

The Museum purchased the bowl from Messrs Martin Klop and Co, Hooge Nieuwstraat, 32, The Hague.
