Place of origin

This button was described as 18th-century Dutch when it was acquired by the Museum in 1892.

Antique Dutch silver of all kinds was immensely popular in Britain at the end of the 19th century, particularly buttons. This button may be Dutch, but the design is rather unusual. It is more likely to come from the region around Hamburg, in north Germany.
