Ribbon

ca. 1850-1851 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Ribbon of green figured silk. With a satin selvedge and 'pearl edge' of green weft threads and with a main ground bound in fancy scale pattern within a white silk scrolling border, outside which the ground is in tabby. A strange feature of the scale pattern is that it points inward from each border, meeting in the central parts not covered by the main floral design. The design consists of sprays of trumpet-shaped flowers in white silk, and leaves and petals marked by mingling areas of flushed weft with areas of weft bound in a variety of fancy twills and tabby. With a label stating that the ribbon was exhibited in the 1851 Great Exhibitiion.
