Place of origin |
Furnishing fabric of roller-printed cotton. Printed in blue with a chinoiserie pillar print. The design is printed from a coarse stipple-engraved roller only about 12 inches wide and 12 inches in circumference. The design is repeated twice in the width of the material, with a half drop repeat, and a little being lost over each side selvedge.
The design is of a fluted column wreathed with flowers above an improbable capital with drawn volutes above a double row of stiff leaf shapes. To either side of the column are small chinoiserie vignettes. To the left is a man smoking a pipe, a boy is by a fence with a fan, and a domed pavilion in which sits a man with a musical instrument and a boy with a parasol over a smaller pavilion. To the right is a man with a stick and a boy with a parasol, and two boys and a woman holding a parasol over a seated stag. Small pavilions separated the scenes, and the whole is given unity by the sprays of flowers which spring from the small 'islands' and from behind the column.
