Border

19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Scalloped border of bobbin lace made with cotton with a delicate ground of the round Flemish type. Two interlaced lines of linked ovals outline the lower edge of the scallops and form a curved edge above each of them. The centre of each scallop is filled with three concentric clothwork semi-circles linked by tallies and divided down the centre by a straight line. The linked chains and the central line are outlined by a glossy gimp thread. The mesh ground is slightly unusual for English lace of this date.
