Object history
Registered File number 1983/2161.
The lace shows a mixture of influences - the solid clothwork, contrasting with a fine net ground, and the detached petals are reminiscent of the 19th century 'point de gaze' needle lace but the pattern of rococo cartouches and floral sprigs owes much to bobbin lace of the mid-18th century. The border has been cut at both ends and when acquired had been gathered along the top edge possibly for use as a bertha collar in the late 1890s. It has been restored to a straight border.
