Furnishing Textile

1815-1820 (made)
Place of origin

This piece of roller printed cotton, with silver thread trimming, comprises an incomplete pattern repeat with two scenes from the life of Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots) set in luxuriant foliage complemented by renaissance architectural details. The female figures wear historicised fashionable dress of about 1815-20, in which the taste for 16th-century jewellery and trimmings is evident, particularly in the lace collars. The male courtiers, in contrast, are dressed in an early 19th-century interpretation of 16th-century dress.
