The South Kensington Museum (the V&A) was founded with a collection of contemporary work from many countries to be used as a teaching collection for the instruction of students at its own design school (now the Royal College of Art) as well as at a network of associated design schools throughout the country. The museum was also interested in the work of students abroad and this dish was acquired as such an example. The student, Mlle C. Lombard, then aged 23, decorated this dish after a painting by Philip de Loutherbourg
