The South Kensington Museum (the V&A) was founded with a collection of contemporary work from many countries to be used as a teaching collection for the instruction of students at its own design school (now the Royal College of Art) as well as at a network of associated design schools throughout the country. The museum was also interested in the work of students abroad and this plate was acquired as such an example.
