Stove tiles
1850-1

These tiles, one pierced for heat transfer, survive from Pugin's Great Exhibition stove. They convey the kaleidoscopic colours that greeted visitors to the Medieval Court. The 'majolica-glazed' tiles, three centimetres thick and richly moulded, harness techniques developed by Minton's French artist, Léon Arnoux. Pugin supplied tile designs to Minton who was happy to cover the cost of making patterns and moulds if he could reproduce them for general sale.

Object history
Group of four stove tiles [2768 to 2771-1901]: Made as part of the large stove designed by A.W.N. Pugin for the Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition 1851. The stove was constructed of "majolica-glazed" tiles set in an iron frame made by Hardman of Birmingham, some of the upper tiles such as the Museums examples, being perforated. Acquired by the Museum of Practical Geology (Jermyn Street Collection) from the Exhibition, after which the stove was apparently dismantled. Transferred to the V&A in 1901.
