Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Plate of tin-glazed earthenware, painted in the style of Italian majolica, after the altar-piece in the church of San Zeno, Verona, by Andrea Mantegna. In the form of a 16th century bacile. In the middle is the Virgin seated with the Infant Christ standing on her knees on a high-back throne before a colonnade ornamented with bas-reliefs, in a landscape. On the rim are two amorini flying in the air, in circular medallions separated by garlands of fruit and foliage between two narrow bands of bead ornament. The underside is painted with pointed rays with small circles between them in blue outline on the rim, and a design of scrolled leafy stems in the centre in yellow. The letters of the signature are set one in each interval between the rays.
