This Höchst porcelain brazier would have been used to pass around hot coals to assist gentlemen to light their tobaco pipes after a meal. The piercing enabled oxygen to reach to the lower coals. In Germany such braziers were known as Holzkohlebecken.

Physical description | Brazier of hard-paste porcelain and with a socket for a wooden handle. Supported on a foot decorated with wavy mouldings. The sides have four star-shaped perforations and are ornamented with moulded acanthus leaves. The rim is decorated with rococo scrolls. |
