Object history | Given by Antony Dufort, 41 Tunstall Road, London SW9 The tile was excavated with C.182-1980 and probably comes from the site of Malmesbury Abbey, according to Jonathan Horne who sold his tiles to Mr. Dufort. Similar tiles are known from Stanley Abbey, near Chippenham, Wiltshire The three cavities in the back provided an extra bond between the tiles and the mortar bed in which they were set. They were more widely used in the 13th century than in later times. |
