The Gothic Revival designer A.W.N.Pugin reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury. This tile, adorned with a lion rampant, comes from Alton Towers, Shrewsbury's seat.

Brief description
Tile of earthenware with inlaid decoration, designed by A.W.N. Pugin, made by Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, England, c.1842-44.
Physical description
Earthenware tile, square with bevelled edges and hand-keyed back (irregular pointed stab marks). It is encaustic, inlaid with buff clay on black body, the inlay is covered with yellow glaze. The decoration on this tile is interlaced letter, 'JT', likely to be for John Talbot, a prominent patron of Pugin.
