Dissected puzzles were the forerunners of jigsaws. They often portray interesting events. Processions like this one are shown in tiers, usually three or four, to give an impression of a long line. The Lord Mayor's show is still traditionally held in November in the City of London. The water barges, however, no longer feature as part of the procession.
