Historical context | Rewards: winning tricks and gaining the lowest score Forfeits: losing tricks and gaining the highest score No. of Players: any Equipment required: 44 cards arranged in 4 sets of 11 cards; each set is numbered 1 to 11 Rules: Rules for 'WIZARD OF OZ CARD GAME' Copyright. Entered at Stationers' Hall CARDS The pack contains 44 cards (11 each of four suits). Each suit is denoted by a different coloured number, Red, Green, Blue and Black. There are 4 sets of numbers 1 to 11. PENALTY CARDS (1 in each suit) are all numbered 9. DEAL Player cutting the highest number deals. Afterwards the deal passes clockwise. Deal an equal number of cards to each player, any odd cards being left in the centre of the table, face down and unused during during that hand, are shuffled into the pack again for the next deal, eg if 4 players each will receive 11 cards, and if 5 players 8 cards each with 4 over to go face down in the centre. Player on left of dealer has first lead. PLAY The highest number played at each round takes the trick and the winner leads to the next. All must follow suit if able to do so, or otherwise may discard any card. A player not following suit when able to do so loses 25 popints unless he corrects the mistake before the trick is turned over. Anyone may challenge another player by saying, 'Having no Red?' and so on, according to the colour led. POINTS When all the cards dealt have been played each player counts the total of the numbers on the Red cards and the Penalty cards, contaianed in the tricks he has taken. These points are scored against the player. Double points (18) are scored against the person having the Red penalty card in his trick. The Winner is the player with the lowest total when any player reaches a score of 250 or more. For more than five players, two packs should be used. HINTS for Players It may pay to take a trick having a small score total to obtain the lead to the next trick. When able to discard it is usually policy to get rid of any Penalty card. Avoid leading higher than the Penalty number in any suit when the Penalty card remains to be played. |
