Historical context | Rewards: winning pool Forfeits: not winning any counters No. of Players: any Equipment required: 52 cards (one is missing) counters for each player Rules: VICTORIA OR THE ROSE, THISTLE AN SHAMROCK A GAME DIRECTIONS FOR PLAYING It will be seen that the cards are made with the four emblems the Rose, The Harp, The Thistle and Prince of Wales's Feathers, representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Any number of persons may play at this mirthful game, the more the merrier. Counters must be distributed in the usual manner, and each player to put one counter into a pool. The game is commenced by dealing round all the cards with their faces downwards, to each player, beginning at the left hand. The player on the left hand of the dealer may then turn up one of his cards, to be followed by the next player; if the two cards are a pair, that is the same emblem and number, it forms one trick, to be taken by the second player; if not a pair, both cards must be put into the cetre of the table, and the third player may proceed, matching any of the cards in the middle of the table or paying one counter to the pool. The fourth player proceeds in the same manner and so on. When a player turns up one of the Royal Cards, he must keep it till another player turns one up; when he takes the two cards, the player who turns up a third Royal Card takes the three; and when a player can complete the four cards in his regular turn, he wins the game and may take the pool. the game is also won by the first player who can obtain six tricks or pairs. Every player, when the game is won, to put into the pool one counter for each card he has remianing. There are 3 of each set marked with one emblem and 3 of each marked with two; however, there are only 2 of each set marked with 3, 4 or 5 emblems. The feathers and thistle emblems are printed in black with red lettering for the songs and the rose and harp emblems are printed in red with black lettering for the songs. The emblems are printed down the centre from the top edge with the title and most of the song verse below, however, more verses (usually 4 lines each) are printed sideways to the illustration on both the left and right. |
