Scarf Border

ca. 1835-1845 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Scarf border woven in wool and silk. On a black silk warp with a design of interlocking compartments containing stylised floral motifs. The top row is in alternate colours of red and white, the lower row in alternate colours of yellow and black. The wide border (6.375 inches) ends with a row of red and white shapes on a black ground which is repeated on a smaller scale on the narrow border (1.125 inches) which runs all around the scarf. The two other colours present are olive green and a bright blue, the latter used sparingly. The scarf border is bound in 3/1 twill with the loose ends cropped on the back. The centre, consisting of plain white wool, has been cut away. Applied on all sides is a woven fringe of white silk.

The border of the scarf has at one time been removed, cut in two and reapplied so that one half of each end border and one side border were reversed. The applied silk fringe was cut and joined with the border, indicating the original construction of the scarf.
