Dress Fabric
1747-1749 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Dress fabric of brocaded silk with a cream tabby ground and brocaded with a central spray of flowers including carnations at the top and pink lilies of the valley below. Fine smaller sprigs are scattered around. The pattern is reversed in each repeat. Part of the design is self-coloured made by an interruption of the ground weave, so that the warp threads float on the back in these areas. The brocaded wefts are unbound but the self-coloured pattern is bound in 3/1 twill by a proportion of the ground warp threads. This gives the fabric some stability in these areas. The selvage is plain tabby, one outer cord and 0.375 inches (0.9525 cms) wide.
