Textile, woven in white, yellow and dark green silk upon a crimson satin ground. The pattern is formed by heart-shaped compartments enclosed by heavy curving leaves springing from a common stalk on which grow pomegranates and which are terminated by floral forms. Within these compartments are pairs of crowned rampant lions.

Woven silk Dye samples of this textile were analysed as part of the project “Caracterización de las producciones textiles de la Antigüedad Tardía y Edad Media temprana: tejidos coptos, sasánidas, bizantinos e hispanomusulmanes en las colecciones públicas españolas” (“Characterization of Late Antique and Early Medieval textile production: Coptic, Sasanian, Byzantine and Spanish Muslim textiles in Spanish national collections”) (HAR2008-04161) directed by Dr Laura Rodríguez Peinado, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Dpt. de Historia del Arte I (Medieval). Analysis was conducted by Enrique Parra at the Alfonso X El Sabio University, Madrid. The dyes were analysed through high- performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), extracting threads with a thickness varying between 5 and 1mm by means of 100 µL of methanol/hydrochloric acid/water 1:2:1. The results for this textile were as follows: Red - Kermes White - X Yellow - No dye detected Dark blue - Indigo

Purchased in May 1910, as one of 201 textiles in total, for £260 from the Spanish Art Gallery (50 Conduit Street, London), founded in 1907 by Lionel Harris and concentrating on importing art from Spain into England.

The said group of textiles acquired from Lionel Harris commences with the Museum number T.66-1910 and ends with T.260-1910
Object history
Acquired as part of a collection from Mr. Harris of the Spanish Art Gallery, 50 Conduit St.

The textiles were obtained by Mr. Harris in Spain and purchased by the museum for £260 on 13 May 1910. Registered as T.66 to 260-1910.

Nine fragments sewn together.
