This cotton, plate printed in red on a plain weave ground, takes its name 'The Chariot of Dawn' from the dominant scene in the pattern repeat, taken from an engraving of Guido Reni's 'Aurora' (1614), a ceiling fresco in the casino of the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome. A proof of an engraving by Raphael Morgen following the drawing by Antonio Cavalluci (1787) is preserved in the British Museum (Guidus Rheni pinx / Antonius Cavallucci delin. / Raphael Morghen sculp Romae, 1843,0513.1089).
