Furnishing Fabric

1670-1699 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Portions of a wall-hanging, on coarse hand-woven canvas, printed in black outline from wood blocks with additions of body colour painted on by brush (blue, green, and light red). The main portion has a large pattern of an oak tree with the head and shoulders of a gentleman and lady beneath. The gentleman is wearing a wig and cravat, and the lady is wearing a low-necked bodice and necklace, possibly referring to King Charles II and his Queen, Catherine of Braganza. There are three fragments showing the knees of a seated figure, a spaniel, sheep, birds, flowering plants and foliage. The individual fragments have been mounted together on another piece of fabric.
