Fichu

1760s (woven), 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The satin is a dark pink, brocaded in white, green, yellow, brown and pinks. The pattern is of trailing floral stems and ribbons tied in bows. It shows traces, including a seam and a dart, that the silk was reused from a dress, although its condition is very fresh and shows almost no signs of wear or fading. At a later stage, probably the late 19th century, the satin was made into a fichu by backing it with a fine cream silk and edging it with a cream silk fringe.
