18th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Oblong snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in red and painted in polychrome enamels, and gilded. On the lid, sides and bottom are prints painted over, surrounded by raised scrollwork in gold and white, on the sides flanked by gilt trellis-diaper on a pink (rose Pompadour) ground. The subject on the lid is a lady and gentleman on a terrace in costume of about 1750. They stand together, the lady holds a rose in her right hand, perhaps just presented to her by the gentleman. She holds a fan and a straw hat in her left hand. Round the sides are subjects printed on pl. 32 of The Ladies' Amusement. They represent (1) two gentlemen and a lady angling, one standing, the others seated; (2) a gentleman and lady reclining against a tree stump; (3) a girl dancing before a gentleman who sits on a rock with another playing a fiddle behind him. On the bottom is a peacock perched on a balustrade, with trees and a house in the distance. Inside the lid, against a pale yellow background, is a portrait of Mrs. Brooks, after Houston. With a chased gilt metal mount.
