Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Oblong snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in purple and painted in polychrome enamels, and gilded. On the lid is a print, painted over, of a girl, seen three-quarter length, seated by a column holding an open music book, and a boy standing at the side playing on a pipe. The sides are repousse, each with an oblong panel with bowed ends in relief, printed with landscapes painted over, and surrounded by raised gilt scrolls and stars, each on a ground of different colour. The details of the landscapes are as follows: (1) on a pink (rose Pompadour) ground, the view of a river; (2) on a lavender-blue ground, a village with a church, and in the foreground a cart on a road; (3) on a pale yellow ground, three hares and a distant church; (4) on a pale mauve ground a village with a house behind a high wall on one side and an inn on the other side of the road. On the bottom are formal devices in gold. With a perforated and chased gilt metal mount.
