Rectangular snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in black and gold, on a gilt metal mount. Inside the lid is a portrait of the Duke of Dorset, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, adapted from an engraving by James McArdell after a painting at Knole by Sir Godfrey Kneller. Outside it is an allegorical print of Britannia, supporting a shield with the arms of the Duke, encouraging Irish manufactures as symbolised by Hibernia with a distaff and loom. The sides are printed in gold with panels of diaper ornament enclosed by a rococo scrolled framework. The prints on the lid are in black. The Duke of Dorset is shown half length, his head directed slightly to the left, wearing the star and ribbon of the order of the Garter. In the allegorical print Britannia stands to the left, in helmet,mail breastplate and robe, with shield and spear, addressing Hibernia, who sits by a loom to the right, with her distaff and, at her side, the Irish harp.
