18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Oblong snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in black in polychrome enamels, and gilded. On the lid are two ladies, one of them walking arm-in-arm with a gentleman, in dress of about 1750, in a garden with formal grass-plots and a country house in the background. The print is enclosed by raised gilt rococo scrolls, as also is that on the bottom, representing an equestrian and other figures beside a river on the farther bank of which is a church with a spire. The prints on the sides are as follows: (1) a man drinking and a woman drawing water at the shell-shaped basin of a fountain, with others beside a river and a large building in the background; (2) a man and woman rowing on a river; (3) two men approaching a classical rotunda; (4) a landscape with a ruined castle, a bridge, a church and figures. Inside the lid are a lady and gentleman seated, the former with a mandolin, the latter holding open a music book, whilst another gentleman leans on the back of the lady's chair; behind the figures is rococo scrollwork, with a cupid reclining at one end. With a chased gilt metal mount.
