Artist/Maker
Place of origin

John Henry Dearle was a designer of textiles, tapestries and stained glass. He joined the firm of Morris & Co in 1878 and became the principal designer of the company after the death of William Morris in 1896. Dearle emulated Morris's style, with its use of formalized natural elements, and his designs often adapt motifs taken from earlier patterns by Morris. Here the large swirling leaves are inspired by Morris's 'Acanthus' design (1874) and the details in the background recall 'Daisy' (1864), the first wallpaper issued by Morris & Co.
