Seated Buddha Shakyamuni

The historical Buddha is seated on a double-lotus throne, his
right hand raised in a gesture of instruction (vitarka mudra).
He wears a monk’s robe drawn over his left shoulder and
originally had a circular nimbus, of which the lower half remains.
Similar figures in stone have been found at the great Buddhist
monuments of Central Java.

Object history
This sculpture was acquired in the 1960's by the present owner from Professor S.Eilenberg.
Purchased from Alex. Biancardi at a discounted figure of £6250. in 1995, partly with Neil Kreitman Foundationw.
Historical context
In posture and attitude, this figure relates closely to the stone Buddhas associated with the great Buddhist monuments of Central Java.
