Object history | Given to the Museum of Practical Geology in 1893 by H.R.Clay Esq. Listed in Nominal File (transfer papers) as no. 2665. Made of 'cristal trempé' (toughened glass) invented by De La Bastie in about 1870. De La Bastie's method was to heat the glass to fusing point and then to plunge it into hot oil. In July 1875 de la Bastie visited the (Whitefriars?) and 'superintended experiments in his process of 'glass toughening' [in which] various mixtures of oil and tallow were used at various temperatures' (Powell, 1923, p162). |
