Historical context | This fragment formed part of a circular lidded box decorated with relief carving on the exterior. The relief depicts a female nature-spirit (yaksi), a much favoured subject in early Indian Sculpture. The yaksi is seen naked but is richly endowed with jewellery in the form of a headband, necklace, bracelets, earplugs and a massive belt which adorns her hips. Her hair is gathered in a massive coiffure offset to one side and she holds a lotus (padma) in her raised hand. Her other hand is visible resting on her hip. This rare example of early Indian ivory sculpture finds its nearest parallels in the moulded terracottas of eastern India. |
