Object history | Bought from Mr. Alex Biancardi (Walmore Collection). This bronze was probably produced in central Java under the patronage of the Sailendra dynasty or, more likely, in Sumatra where Buddhism received state patronage from Srivijaya, the maritime state centred around Palembang. This sculpture illustrates the skills of early western Indonesian bronze casters in realising the aesthetic ideals expressed in the finest Buddhist art. |
