Object history | Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, with other contemporary glassmakers interested in pâte de verre at the beginning of the century followed, closely in the footsteps of the pioneering Henry Cros. A shrewd businessman with a keen eye for fashionable taste as well as a prolific and technically highly skilful glassmaker, Argy-Rousseau was extremely successful. This cigarette box and cover, known in the catalogues as 'Ibis', was inspired by motifs from ancient Egypt. It was designed in 1923, a year after the discovery of Tutankhamun's treasure. |
