Object history
Pieces of the same 'Alhambresque' design were shown at the London International Exhibition of 1862. The Alhambra palace in Grenada, Spain, was the residence of the Nasrids, the last Islamic rulers of Spain who were eventually expelled in 1492. The richly decorated halls of the palace, with their characteristic 'horseshoe' arches, became a popular source of decorative designs in Britain after their detailed publication by Owen Jones in 1842-6.
