Object history
Given by Mr. Imre Schwaiger in 1933. RP 1933/84., It was sent as a gift from Dehli. Codrington had seen it in the donor's garden in Dehli and had expressed interest in it.
Historical context
Colossal Head from one of the Guardians of a Buddhist Temple Doorway (Dvarapala), carved in full relief in red sandstone. Kushan dynasty, early 2nd century AD Mathura. Mounted on a tinted cement neck and pylon-base.
The face has been sliced away. The elaborate Mauryan turban is figured with squares containing leafy sprays and kind of honeycomb pattern imitating kincob fabric. The securing brooch or sarpesh above the forehead has also been broken away.
