Historical context | The ritual bell (Skt. ghanta, Tib. dril bu) is used in the Buddhist context to symbolise supreme knowledge and when used in combination with the thunderbolt sceptre (Skt. vajra, Tib. dorge), symbolizing compassion, represents the highest state of consciousness, the prerequisite for salvation. The bronze handle is formed by half a dorge, seen above the thumbring, and others form a decorative border on the bell. |
