Object history | Bought from Doris Wiener of New York. RPs. 88/2087, |
Historical context | This figure of a female nature-spirit (yaksi), standing in a relaxed posture, is related to the famous tree-kicking pose (salabhanjika) seen in the bracket-figures of early Indian temple sculpture. In this example the yaksi holds a lotus (padma) in her lower hand whilst a hamsa (duck) catches droplets which fall from its petals. The figure is adorned with jewellery and wears her long hair gathered in an elaborate spiral. Two features of this bronze, the flat square base on which it stands and a large hole in the top of the head, suggest that it may have served as one set of legs to a low table. |
Production | probably Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India- Kushan period. |
