Object history | Six cartoons executed in Indian ink and chalk, illustrating scenes in the history of St. Osward: 1) The Baptism of St. Oswald; 2) St. Oswald crowned as King of Bernicia; 3) St. Oswald receiving Bishop Aidan, the missionary to the Northumbrians; 4) St. Oswald slays the Welsh King Cadwallon at the battle of Maserfeld in 642 A.D. when fighting against Penda, King of Mercia; 6) Bishop Aidan receiving the head of St. Oswald at LIndisarne. By Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893). Some of the cartoons are signed with his monogram and are dated Sep. 64. Accession register entry, 1894 |
