Object history | Inventoried as part of the contents of the former India Museum transferred to South Kensington Museum in November 1879. Formally gifted to the V&A and reaccessioned in 1924. |
Historical context | The Bodhisattva is represented seated on a lotus-throne with the legs folded in the padmasan: the right hand is held down in the varada mudra, whilst the left holds the stem of a lotus-flower, rising to the shoulder of the god. He is clad in a skirt and the usual thirteen ornaments of his rank. Behind the head is a crescent-shaped attachment. |
