Head of the Buddha

Sculpture
6th century-7th century (made)
Artist/Maker

This head is in the style of Buddhist art associated with Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, which is in turn inspired by the school of Amaravati, a major centre of Buddhist patronage on India's eastern coast. It is reported that this head was found in Java, Indonesia. There is precedent for such a claim, as a number of Buddhist sculptures in the Amaravati/Sinhalese style have been found in Southeast Asia, from sites in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
