In the Hinduism practised by the early rulers of Cambodia the cult of Siva was paramount. In the temple-mountains which they constructed the cult image was Siva in the form of a linga. Representations of Siva in his human form were also produced, ranging from life-size stone sculptures to bronze of this scale. Siva can be recognized by the trident (trisula) he holds and the crescent moon set in his headdress (jatamukuta). An ornate trefoil arch serves as the backplate to the image, decorated with a flame-foliage border and terminating in multi-headed nagas. this framing devise (torana), supported by two half columns, follows the conventions of Angkorian temple architecture.
