This bedding cover would have been part of a bride's wedding trousseau. Designs on such celebratory textiles were chosen to bestow good fortune on the newly married couple. This motif of pine, bamboo and plum symbolises longevity, perseverance and renewal. The upper part of the cover features a large crest, known as a mon, which served to affirm family status, kinship and loyalty.
