His fashion, advertising, news and portrait images were used in newspapers such as the Daily Mail and the Daily Express and in magazines such as Tatler. Townsend photographed many icons of the era including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Yuri Gagarin, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
The car in this photograph is a Mercedes Benz 300 Gullwing. Production of these cars began in 1954 and only a few thousand were ever made. Townsend borrowed the car for this photo shoot with a model in Surrey.
