The readmission of traditional subject matter in design
following the austerity of the Great Proletarian Cultural
Revolution (1966-1976) was a powerful metaphor for
the relaxation experienced in all aspects of Chinese life.
The mug retains a classic form, soon to be reduced to
the status of a tourist souvenir as domestic customers
shunned its austere associations.
