Gallery label | Adriaen Brouwer was a leading painter of peasant scenes. He was credited with introducing greater authenticity to his characters’ coarse expressions and strong emotions than his predecessors. Studies like these, which appear to depict the same subject in different poses, were drawn from life. Brouwer would rapidly capture the subject’s changing gestures and expressions. |
