Josef Riedel, a German by birth, experimented from about 1830-48 by tinting glass with different oxides. Annagrün is a uranium based glass which gives it a distinctive 'yellowish-green' colour, while Annagelb is a 'greenish-yellow', the colour being derived from the addition of antimony or silver chloride. Josef Riedel is said to have named this type of glass after his wife, Anna. Other glasshouses copied Riedel's technique, including the Harrach Glassworks.
