Writing Box

ca. 1870 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

With the interest in techniques that emerged in the latter part of the Edo period (1615-1868) regional lacquer techniques developed, such as Wakasanuri from Wakasa province. Their popularity was often associated with other forms of fancy lacquering (kawarinuri) used in the decoration of sword scabbards. These techniques were then applied to other objects such as this writing box, partly perhaps because the wearing of swords was banned in 1876.
