Physical description | Medal, bronze, struck from a die, in commemoration of the raising and equipment of the City of London Imperial Volunteers and their service in South Africs, 1899-1900. The obverse bears the inscription PRO PATRIA REGINA ET VRBE. A seated figure representing the City of London giving the freedom of the city to a member of the corps. At the sides are heralds blowing trumpets and above soldiers on the march. From the base spring branches of oak entwined with ribbons bearing names of engagements. SIgned GEO. FRAMPTON. Rev.: THE CITY OF LONDON IMPERIAL VOLUNTEERS RAISED AND EQUIPPED FOR THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA BY THE CITIZENS OF LONDON, FORMED DECEMBER, 1899, RETURNED TO LONDON OCTOBER, 1900. The sun raising behind a mound, surmounted by a staff flying the Union Jack and the flag of the corps, and encricled by young oaks, emblematic of the new territories. In front, two guns. |
