Project for a Summer Casino,
Monte Carlo, Monaco
British, about 1970
Pen and ink, felt tipped pen and
collage
This is part of a scheme entered in a
limited competition for a new casino
incorporating parts of the 1930s summer
Casino on reclaimed land to the east of the
harbour. Archigram, a loose grouping of
architects and theoreticians, submitted a
radical mix of building, its equipment,
luxuriant vegetation and water that was
flexible enough to allow several changes of
décor each season. They declared it to be a
deliberate attempt at using "...ambigious
and idiosyncratic collection of parts that
did not add up to...a formal building." |

Object history | This is one of a Set of 16 panels explaining and illustrating a brief history of Archigram, giving a description and incorporating parts of Archigram's entries in two competitions for projects in Monte Carlo. The projects were for an Entertainment Facility (1969) and projects for a Summer Casino (1972), neither was built. Archigram won first prize in the Monte Carlo Competition in January 1970 and were then asked to design extra facilities. This resulted in nearly trebling the estimated cost and the project was not built. This particular panel is numbered 15. |
